Maria Kirchental is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Salzburg with a vast natural, cultural and historical heritage. For more than 300 years people from Salzburg, Tyrol, Upper Austria and Bavaria have been making pilgrimages to this place of grace, 900 m above sea level at the foot of the Loferer Steinberge. Renovated in 2001, the shrine holds a miraculous image that was carved around 1400 by an unknown late Gothic artist for the parish church of St. Martin. The child Jesus on the arm of the Mother of God carries in his left hand a goldfinch, which he points to with his right hand as if to recall the passage from Matthew 6: “Look at the birds of the air...” In 1689 the image was brought by a farmer named Rupert Schmuck to a forest chapel, to which a pilgrimage quickly and spontaneously began. Due to the many answered prayers, several votive offerings were received, and the local archbishop Johannes Graf von Thun decided to build a pilgrimage shrine there. The Kirchentaler Pilgrimage Museum with the largest collection of votive images of historical and artistic value in Austria was also opened on September 7, 2004.

The presence of the community in this place is as recent as July 2024. And so now we hope to offer "the peace of Jesus" that we have received to pilgrims and visitors who have the possibility of overnight  stays in our guest house. We can accomodate both groups and individuals. We offer a wonderful experience of nature with walkways that connect the Shrine and the village of St. Martin.

How to arrive

Arrival by plane:

you can reach Munich or Salzburg airport and from there continue by car, taxi, bus or train to St. Martin Bei Lofer. From the village of St. Martin you may walk to the shrine. This climb takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes

By car:

In the summer months access to the upper parking lots is possible.

In the winter months the road is closed

Arrival by train:

You can reach Salzburg by train and then take a connection to St.Martin bei Lofer from which you continue a few km on foot as described above.

Arrival by car or bus:

From Munich via Bad Reichenhall, Schneizelreuth, Lofer or via Kössen and Waidring. (The road via Inzell is still closed).

from the direction of Zell am See via Saalfelden - to St. Martin “junction Ort”

Tolls

The old toll road is no longer staffed: the barrier is always open.

Toll and parking are paid together at the machines in the parking lots above.

For cars 5 euros.

For buses with 20 or more people 40 euros.

Currently you can pay with coins! Enter the exact amount, the machine does not give change.

There is also an option to pay by card.

Aggregated spouses and consecrated seculars are an integral part of our Ecclesial Family and work, in their respective ecclesial realities, in communion with the local Bishop and the Holy Father. In this way we are present in other regions of Italy, Brazil and other countries scattered throughout the world.
